We recently got an opportunity to have a conversation with J Wilkerson. Here it is.
Twist Online : Our readers would like to know about start of your professional career.
J Wilkerson : I started my career only a few years ago, I had been involved with music for a while. My dad is a music head and was also a lead singer in a group called the Ho-9 back in the day. My mom is a 90’s R&B all day everyday type of lady , so I was very influenced. But tbh if it weren’t for my cousin David Salls aka Lil Redd, I would have never seen a booth. I owe him for that… oh and my cousin Los , I don’t know how he feels about it now because we don’t talk much but he’s invested and I’m grateful.
Twist Online : Who or what inspired you to get into music industry?
J Wilkerson : My inspiration comes from my parents but also the love I have for music it speaks to my soul and my spirit , legit couldn’t live without music. I will say doubt inspires me . I know who I am, it’s only a matter of time before every knows. Not to sound cocky but I’m confident.
Twist Online : Tell us about your debut Album?
J Wilkerson : Debut Album ? Uh… working on that. I will say there is a big opportunity there but I have to deliver. Personally I think that will come shortly after a deal is signed. For now , I’m focused on extended playlists.
Twist Online : What kind of response have you received from your recent releases?
J Wilkerson : Not an album but with songs I have released , I always get really productive and helpful feedback . Never really any negative responses . People do believe in my potential and think we’ll go the distance.
Twist Online : What attracts you more performing on stage or working in studios?
J Wilkerson : Personally, I’m attracted to the studio more than performing because it’s my sanctuary. It’s where I can express myself the best. I do think that will change in time though. I feel like once I get into the huge performances I’ll crave that reaction. Gotta bless the people
Twist Online : What’s your favorite music genre?
J Wilkerson : My Favorite music genre? People never believe me when I tell them this because you really don’t hear it in my music but I’m in Love with reggae. Bob Marley is my spiritual grandfather. I might retire ,move to Jamaica and become a Rastafarian. (Lol).
Twist Online : Have you set some goals to achieve as a music artist?
J Wilkerson : I’ve set a few goals for myself .I want to release 2-3 projects before the end of the year. Would love to finalize a deal with a label I’m interested in and hope to put my family in a better financial position. This is the beginning.
