A Conversation With A Talented Music Artist CHAZZY
CHAZZY is an independent recording artist and writer from California. From working with Lench Mob’s Young Maylay to Strong Arm Steady’s Krondon, hands-up at venues such as: The Troubadour to the House of Blues, from sharing the stage with Pharaohe Monch to Dr. Dre protégé Jon Connor — alongside penning a hook for a record that featured Glasses Malone — it’s safe to say this California native is definitely worth a listen.
Currently wrapping up his project MISS ME — alongside previously releasing the single of the same name — as of Aug 5th, he has put out two more records: “Moon” & “Slow Motion”, via all digital retailers.
We are sharing our recent interview with him.
Twist Online : First of all please introduce yourself to our readers.
CHAZZY : How’s everybody doing? My name is CHAZZY. I am a recording artist & engineer from California, and before this even continues, I thank you all for taking the time and interest to further read. I appreciate it.
Twist Online : Who or what inspired you to get into music industry?
CHAZZY : It started first with my mother, father and uncle. My mother simply being in love with music & always playing all kinds of genres in my presence growing up. I would hear music all the time. My father and my uncle — his brother — being in bands for years, always took me to the studio with them and rehearsals with them. I would hop on stage and belt out Pearl Jam songs, KISS, Soundgarden and even later, KoRN (even one time being IN the studio with KoRn, I was young). A lot of rock music inspiration in my past, and even still today, until I branched out more into other genres and found a solid love within HipHop, Rap and more.
I rank Biggie high up on my inspirational list, with Eminem being a big break-thru point for me. Linkin Park — and my god, RIP Chester — a giant influence, Chris Cornell (another tragic loss), Eddie Veder, all the way to game composer Koji Kondo.
Twist Online : Tell us about your upcoming project MISS ME. when it will be released?
CHAZZY : The best part of doing things when you want, how you want, with no restrictions or someone else giving you a deadline, is just that…you can do it when you want and how you want. Right now, we are tidying up the mastering on a few of the last songs on the project. I am somewhat of an overkill on perfectionism, it’s a double edged sword of good and bad, haha. Good being, that maybe I will make sure things are right? Even tho music is subjective. Bad being that it sometimes takes me way to long to put a date on something. Such as where I am with “MISS ME” at the moment. It’ll be out before the end of the year.
Twist Online : You have also released a single MISS ME along with two singles MOON and SLOW MOTION. Tell us more about these ?
CHAZZY : Yes. I took a large amount of time off from releasing any music. I got tired of…not being better. I felt I could be better. Do better. Do more. Be different…more different. I wanted to reinvent myself. Purely make the music I wanted to make. I don’t even listen to a lot of whats out today. I just want to focus on making what I want to sound like. Thus came working on new material, and with that, I felt comfortable with putting some new stuff out. Being absent from releasing, I thought it fit to release the first track from being ghost: MISS ME.
The song isn’t necessarily about being gone and missing me, or missing someone at all. But rather just the convenience of the title and it coinciding with being gone and it being the first release. The song is about the phrase “Miss me with that bullshit”. Miss me with the nonsense, the drama, the hate, the stupidity — which we’ve grown to be surrounded by more than ever these days. I thought it was a good pick.
MOON and SLOW MOTION are my more recent. MOON is about a relationship where the two have flaws and have constant arguments about one another’s issues. One of the biggest being the songs hook, where I address why the other half is so worried about anything outside the relationship, whereas what should be of concern is us. SLOW MOTION is on par with relationship issues, being that maybe if the two took things slower, the relationship would have lasted. Both of these records do not carry much rap, if none at all. A lot more singing than anything else. A departure from what people may know me for.
Twist Online : What kind of response the singles have received ?
CHAZZY : MOON and SLOW MOTION, I just released as of Saturday, Aug 5th. We will see as the days continue, but so far positive. MISS ME, the single, has been out quite awhile and received nothing but awesome reviews from my understanding, and I am completely humbled and blessed to see hard work be appreciated. I hear the hook tends to get stuck in heads and thats exactly what I want. REMEMBER ME! Lol.
Twist Online : What attracts you more, performing on stage or working in studios?
CHAZZY : Ah, can I pick one? They both have their close-to-the-heart-feelings for me. There’s something amazing about being in the studio, creating what you wrote down and picture in your head come to life. I do a lot of my own singing, alongside rapping, and there’s such a great feeling in hitting those notes…harmonizing. Feeling the emotion in the booth. I’m also a stickler for my engineering to go correctly, thus I haven’t worked with any other engineer besides BackHouze Studio’s Taco, as well as engineering myself. I love sitting there and piecing things together — delays, reverbs, playing with sounds.
But is there a feeling better than hopping on a stage and pouring your heart out and seeing people feel what you say? Seeing your hard work being painted across the eyes and chests of someone staring at you as if your words are being thrown out your mouth in 3D. You can see, right then and there, the appreciation. For those who hold it.
Twist Online : What’s your favorite music genre?
CHAZZY : I do not have a favorite. I genuinely am intrigued by several genres of music. It has its waves of what I’m into most at times, such as right now, I have been listening to a lot of ‘40s music but also a lot of The Neighbourhood. I have always been heavy into Linkin Park, and with Chester’s passing recently, it hit me hard. Before his passing, I was listening to a lot of Linkin Park. I really like Grunge, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden! I am not very pleased with a lot of Rap/Hip Hop today, but it will always hold one of the most special places in my heart.
Twist Online : Have you set some goals to achieve?
CHAZZY : I feel I will always have goals. I always want more. Not in a greedy way. I just want to keep going. I am beyond blessed & humbled to have performed at many staples in California that were goals, that I achieved, alongside performing WITH artists I look up to — being on radio stations I’ve listened to — the list goes on. And the list will continue to go on. I always felt like I was never heard, maybe that’s a big part of it. I just want to be heard. But at the same time, I just want to make the music I like, and I’m achieving that. My biggest goal is setting my family up. That’ll make me feel like I’ve done it all.
