A conversation with JDR about their recent release ‘Only U’

We recently interviewed Sydney, Australia based Music Band JDR. They have released a new single ‘Only U ‘ so our focus will be on the release.

Twist Online : First of all, can you tell us a bit about what started you off on the music career path?
JDR : Music has always been something we’ve both wanted to do from a very young age. As we both started studying music it led us to focus more on production. Ultimately the production side of the music industry is what captured our attention the most and after working on our first project together, we know now that it’s something we want to pursue.

Twist Online : What inspired you to create the band ‘JDR”?
JDR : We both met at JMC Academy studying a bachelor of music. Before the group we had both been creating music in two completely different genres. We had always been good mates and one day we decided to put our styles of writing together and see how it sounded. That was when we made the track ‘Only U’ and it was after that moment that JDR was born.

Twist Online : Our readers would like to know about your band members, what is your musical background, and what roles do each of you play in the group?
JDR : We have both had very different musical backgrounds so at the end of the day it’s difficult to know just how we were brought together. Josh has a background in hip-hop/rnb music where as I (Derrick) enjoyed creating pop/rock music. Bringing those two worlds together was a challenge but it works in the final product. I think given our different backgrounds we both bring something unique and different to the table and that’s what makes JDR stand out.

Twist Online : In your own words, how would you describe your new release ‘Only U’?
JDR : Only U is a track that we are both extremely proud to share. We wanted to create a song that was up tempo, easy listening and something people could get up and dance to. Both of us have a love for catchy melodies and hooks so we wanted to make something that would stick inside people’s heads. The result we got was a catchy summer time anthem that we hope can go down as one of Australia’s best!

Twist Online : It seems like your band is starting to create some serious momentum, how has the process of getting your music to the people been for you?
JDR : It has not been easy. Only U is the first single we have done as a group and that basically means building up a brand-new fan base under the name JDR. We have utilized the contacts we both made from our work as solo acts and we have also had amazing support from the people around us. Our goal is to continue the growth of our fan base over the next coming months by releasing more content and interacting with fans.

Twist Online : What attracts you more, performing on stage or working in the studio?
JDR : That’s a tough one. We haven’t done as much performing as we would like to at this point in time. In saying that though nothing quite compares to the feeling of being on stage performing your own original works. Being in the studio is something we do on the regular now as we are writing and producing new material for live performances. It is hard to determine which one we prefer as we love doing it all!

Twist Online : Other than the style of music you play, what are some other genres you find yourself inspired by?
JDR : We as artists respect and love a variety of different genres. We are often inspired by funk music and we try to incorporate that in some of our writing! Even though we are focused right now on creating a pop/dance sound we are constantly being inspired by many different genres and this is what gives our tracks a unique sound.

Twist Online : You recently released a music video for “Only U”, what was the bands intended message behind the video?
JDR : The video was lots of fun to make. Ultimately we wanted the video to portray a message of just having fun. The song is upbeat and it sounds like summer. We wanted to portray that in the video because that is what we know people would be imagining when they listened to the track.

Twist Online; Lastly, and thank you for your time. Is there anything else you would like to mention here to your listeners?
JDR : We would just like to thank everyone who has supported us up to now. We hope that it continues and we can create many more songs for people to enjoy. Also, always keep your eye out for new material! Thank you so much for having us, cheers.
