A Conversation with Multi-talented Artist Spencer Ezell
We are sharing our recent interview with multi-talented artist Spencer Ezell.
Twist Online : Please introduce yourself to our readers.
Spencer Ezell : My name is Spencer Ezell. I am a singer, songwriter, musician and producer residing in the Nashville Tennessee area. In the past I have released music and performed on stages all across the country with bands Cold Shoulder, Generation Down, Elegant Monsters and EZELL. I currently operate my own recording studio and label New Creature Music, serve as worship leader for Calvary Chapel of Murfreesboro and still perform live as opportunity arises.
Twist Online : Who or what inspired you to get into music industry?
Spencer Ezell : I kinda had a natural desire to pursue music and artistic expression in general. I have always enjoyed creating works that reflect how I feel about life and what happens to me personally in life. Both of my father’s parents were musicians/singers and both of my parentswere artists in their own right. At age 11, I sang in a school Disney program and my music teacher, Mrs. Seale, pushed me to continue singing in the future. I began playing guitar, self-taught, a couple of years later.
Twist Online : Starting with ‘Cold Shoulder’ ended up as director at Calvary Chapel Murfreesboro. You must have learnt so much from these life changing experiences?
Spencer Ezell : Yes absolutely, ha ha. I have always been involved with church since childhood and began serving musically later. I have always loved performing my songs I write
and bringing them to live action on stage, however, someone once told me that once you go down that path for a bit and the more
serious it gets, you’ll have to make the choice of whether that’s the lifestyle you want or not. He was right. I never lost myself
though, and I’m thankful for that.
Twist Online : What’s the best era of your music career ?
Spencer Ezell : I would have to say right now, because it gets better and better everyday. I try not look backwards, other than to be thankful for being blessed and what got me to where I am. Cold Shoulder was my first, real “being in a band” experience. Those guys became my brothers rather than bandmates. Generation Down all the way through Elegant Monsters was my wild, rockstar rollercoaster ride, ha ha. We all contributed in such a special way to our music and it became bigger than us. Being on stage in some very historic clubs in town and hearing hundreds of people sing your songs back to you… there is nothing like it.
EZELL sounds more like a solo venture and in some aspects I guess it was, but I acheived some of my most closley held musical goals during that time period. One being headlining my own show at Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood California. I met several people from all over, one in particular from England, who purchased a couple of my CD’s and really enjoyed my music. I learned a lot about booking and working with musicians and venues and my online presence really grew during this time as well, and my youtube channel began rolling really well.
Twist Online : What do you enjoy more performing on stage or working in studios?
Spencer Ezell : Hmmm that’s a hard one. I would say they are equal in their own right. The creative process of bringing an idea to life in the studio can be amazing. Some songs I’ve written on an acoustic guitar became so powerful once it was fully produced. It became it’s own intity. Being on stage also has the same effect.
Writing a song about a difficult time in your life, recording and releasing it, and then performing it live and having people sing it back to you is the ultimate affrimation. The last puzzle piece.
Twist Online : Which of your Albums received the best response?
Spencer Ezell : That album would probably be “hour23.” This was the first released under the EZELL name in 2011 and was a compilation of a lot of stuff I was working on during a break period after my Elegant Monsters run. I think I truly found myself writing those songs. There was no rush to get things done for a release. Everything came full circle. Many of the songs on this album have been favorites of several fans and myself.
Twist Online : What’s your next goal to achieve?
Spencer Ezell : Recently I have been wanting to utilize the Facebook LIVE feature to do live acoustic sessions, perhaps two songs, to promote new music, promote upcoming shows and even take song requests for fans. Make it personal and interactive. I have been using Facebook LIVE to record some recent live performances and it has gotten huge responses.
Twist Online : Are you working on any new project? When it will be released?
Spencer Ezell : Yes! I am currently moving towards releasing my new EP, “The Human Condition,” on Valentine’s Day, February 14th 2017. It has been just over 3 years since the release of my last original album, “Seasons,” so I’m excited to promote new material! The first single and music video, “Who Is This?”, was released on New Year’s Eve 2016 and in only two weeks received 40,000 views on my YouTube channel! I have 2 more singles/music videos in the works as well for this EP. I am really looking forward to great times ahead!
