A Conversation with Multi-talented Lucjus
Readers, here is our recent interview with talented musician and producer ‘Lucjus’.
Twist Online : Please introduce yourself to our readers.
Lucjus : Hi! I am Lui Siu Tung, better known as Lucjus, I am electronic music producer, sound designer, musician and record producer from Hong Kong. My music is influenced by techno, house, ambient and various breakbeat styles. I started composing music at the age of 15 producing pop and rock until 2014 when I began producing electronic music under my current name. “Lucjus”. In 2017, I released my singles “Sailing Order” and “Cyborg” in iTunes, Apple music, Spotify and other online stores.
Twist Online : Who or what inspired you to get into music industry?
Lucjus : When I was young, I watched rock music videos such as Nirvana, U2 and Oasis in youtube, I felt they are so cool! Then I joined a band as a guitarist and played shows. After the band broke-up, I pursued a solo career as a singer songwriter and distributed an album “Love conscience “ for free download on MySpace. In 2014, I started producing electronic music. I was influenced by Deadmau5 and Apex Twins. I think electronic music is full of imagination and I like creating different special sounds. I have always been able to absorb a variety of influences and inspiration.
Twist Online : Tell us about your recent release “Sailing Order” and “Cyborg”?
Lucjus : Sailing order is blended elements of IDM, downtempo, sound track, experimental, and ambient, I have special idea in this track. I use sound effects, beats and melody to create a story. It is a about adventure of a kid. A kid robbed by pirates, the pirates look horrible, they are skulls and crossbones. They want to kill the kid and the kid evades pursuing.
The styles of Cyborg are techno and acid house. When I was producing this track, there were some imagines in my mind. A man injured from a car accident—> He was taken by ambulance to hospital —> Doctors rescued him in the operating room —> He Died —> He getting turned into a robot by doctors after he died. I used many interesting sound effects to create beats, also I used vocoder and synthesiser to imitate the movement of the robot. I have a lot of fun when I was producing this track!

Twist Online : What kind of response the singles have received so far?
Lucjus : Most of people say my tunes are unique and they haven’t heard this style before. They like listening electronic music that is describing a story, it is a special idea. Some people say they are curious about my process in sound design.
Twist Online : What do you like more performing on stage or working in studios?
Lucjus : Most of time I work in studio, I produce tracks, think ideas, do experiments and twist the knobs in synthesiser. I can sit on a chair and work with Ableton all day, haha. But I like performing on stage too, it is the best way to communicate with audience, I can get feedback from them immediately. I can say that when you are part of a successful stage presentation it feels damned good, it feels incredible, for lack of a better word. You really come alive in that moment.
Twist Online : What’s your favorite music genre?
Lucjus : Well, many….In electronic music , I like progressive house, techno, dubstep and ambient. In other genre, I like rock, country, world music and etc……many…..I like any good music.
Twist Online : Have you set some goals to achieve as a music artist?
Lucjus : Yes, let all the world know that Hong Kong have a lot of great electronic music producers.
Twist Online : Are you working on any new project?
