An interview Shon Browning from Pocket Flash Mafia
We are sharing our recent interview with Shon Browning from Pocket Flash Mafia
Twist Online : First of all please introduce yourself to our readers.
Shon Browning : My name is Shon Browning. I am a producer, songwriter, and one half of the production powerhouse Pocket Flash Mafia.
Twist Online : Who or what inspired you to get into music industry?
Shon Browning : My love for music in general. From the time I was young I was always searching for new sounds. I grew up in a time when modern dancehall and rap music were just starting out, so it was cool watching these sounds develop. Jazz was a big thing for me as well. Musicians in those days were larger than life. You had Prince, Michael Jackson, Rakim, Madonna all in the same time period. I can’t even name all of the stars from back than. It was an amazing time for music. I started as a rapper and writer many years before I produced records, so I would say Public Enemy was probably the first thing that made me want to make music and everything is inspiration these days.
Twist Online : Our readers would like to know more about ‘Pocket Flash Mafia’?
Shon Browning : Pocket Flash Mafia a production group that I formed with my friend LZRKMMNDR. Both of us have been producing records for a long time and our styles really blend well and compliment each other. LZRKMMNDR can play any instrument he touches. He’s like a music savant or something. Our styles are quite different so it really brings something to the table that neither of us would have achieved on our own. As far as the name, Pocket Flash is a cool way of saying money. Like, say you see somebody spending good and I said… “look at Beezy over there flashing pockets”. The mafia part, thats cuz we the mob. I guess its just a cool way of saying Cash Gang or Money Mob… Pocket Flash Mafia.
Twist Online : Tell us about your recent release “KING SOLOMON (feat. Adi Kora)”?
Shon Browning : Thats a big record. Adi Kora is someone I had always wanted to work with. He is from Accra, Ghana. He’s got a really cool style and he is a great writer. I knew when i sent him the music that he was going to kill it, and he did. I gotta say, he really delivered with this one. We made the music here in Florida, He recorded the lyrics with Hype Lyrixx in Ghana, and we mixed it with Gerry King at Skylab Studios. I think its a big tune for all of us.
Twist Online : What kind of response have you received from the release?
Shon Browning : The response has been great. People love it. I think that right now, pop music is becoming more dancehall and afro-beat by the day, so its a really good time for a record like this. Everything is looking real positive. We are getting alot of love from fans, radio and critics alike. Some of our fans have made dance videos to the song, they sing the song on video, I love receiving stuff like that.
Twist Online : Are you producing any particular genres?
Shon Browning : We mostly focus on dancehall, rap, afrobeat, and pop. Really, we are open to anything.
Twist Online : Anything else you would like to share with our readers?
Shon Browning : Yeah, I wanna thank everyone who supports us in any way. An artist is nothing without fans and people who believe in them. The DJ’s who show love, the stations, the fans, it means the world to us. We won’t let you down.
Twist Online : Are you working on any new projects?
Shon Browning : All the time. You can follow us on IG: Pocket_Flash_Mafia … we will keep you posted.3
