An interview with singer-songwriter BeckwithJP
We recently interviewed London based singer-songwriter BeckwithJP, who was born in Aberdeen (Scotland) but was raised in Yarm (Teesside). He achieved a US R&B top 100 hit on the Billboard charts with “You’re That Kind of Girl” (then going by the moniker Beckwith). Most recently he has found success in the singer-songwriter genre with a new stripped down acoustic sound. His self titled EP released in May 2016 reached #13 on the UK iTunes singer-songwriter chart on release.
He has recently released his EP called II.
Twist Online : When did you get into music?
BeckwithJP : I got into music early. I think when I was about 4 years old I fell in love with the R&B group New Edition. When I was about 11-12 I knew that being a songwriter is what I wanted to be.
Twist Online : Have you work with someone inspirational in your music career? And who did you get the most inspiration from??
BeckwithJP : I am lucky that I got to work and grow with my best friend Marvin Ambrosius. I have learned a hell of a lot from him. Especially when it comes to writing to Melody and sometimes not over thinking lyrical content. He is also a super fast recorder. It is very inspiring to watch.
Twist Online : Tell us about your recently released EP called II?
BeckwithJP : The theme of the EP is mainly about friendship. The trials and tribulations of relationships. Its also called II in homage to the second Boyz II Men album. They were a HEAVY influence in my musical youth.
Twist Online : What is your favourite song on your album and what inspired its title?
BeckwithJP : My favourite song is the single ‘I Won’t Let You Down’. It might be my favourite song in my catalogue. It features some wonderful musicians and I am just so proud of it.
The EP is called II in homage to the second Boyz II Men album. They were a HEAVY influence in my musical youth. Also it is the second EP in a trilogy. The next EP will be called III.
Twist Online : What kind of response you have received from the release?
BeckwithJP : So far the response has been quite kind. It is currently #2 in the pre-order iTunes Singer/songwriter chart which is a great start!
Twist Online : What attracts you more, performing on stage or working in studios?
BeckwithJP : Studio, studio, studio. I am a studio rat. For me that is where the magic is, in the construction of a song.
Twist Online : Are you currently working on any other project?
BeckwithJP : I am already plotting the third EP III. We have 3 songs in mind and hopefully that should be released sometime in Spring 2018.
