Interview with a DJ and Radio Personality DJ Frost
Today on our Hot Seat we have an inspiring and talented DJ and a radio personality DJ Frost. Let’s have a chat with her.
Twist Online: First of all tell us about the start of your professional career?
DJ Frost : I was obsessed with music as a kid, always playing guitar, drums and making my own radio shows in my bedroom. In 2012, I saw Kane FM radio, one of the top community stations in the UK, was asking for producers. I went for an interview and they threw me straight in to watch a show on live radio. I was hooked from there and started learning to DJ!
Twist Online: Who or what inspired you to get into the music industry?
DJ Frost : I have some amazing peers in my life who encourage me a lot! Lickle B from Kane FM is an incredible DJ who has always encouraged and believed in me alongside CJ Dread who’s an all-around genius. Eugene Butcher from Vive Le Rock was the first person to give me a chance as a writer and has become a really good friend. Mark Bandola from college rock band The Lucy Show has helped me a lot. Penny Rimbaud from Crass keeps in touch and keeps my feet on the ground. Tom McHugh is a source of great inspiration and encouragement. Jilly Sharp, who would come to London with me, hyped me up and introduced me to key people. These are the Yodas of my journey!
Twist Online : We came to know that you have been on a world tour for the last 6 months. Can we have some more details?
DJ Frost : Yes, I am currently on a World Tour with my radio show ‘Way Out Radio’ which broadcasts weekly in the UK on Kane FM. So far, I have DJed in 11 countries, playing through Croatia, Russia, Japan, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand and more! It’s been an amazing experience and a great opportunity to get my music heard. Next we are heading to Hawaii, road tripping across the USA from LA to New York and finishing the tour in Jamaica.
Twist Online : Tell us about your radio show “Way Out Radio”?
DJ Frost : Way Out Radio is a blog I started 4 years ago. I was writing about my local music scene in Margate and the concerts I was going to. It then became a podcast where I played new music I was in to and last year I was offered my own radio show on Kane FM. We currently have over 60,000 followers across social media and have interviewed loads of amazing artists live on air including Penny from Crass, Alex from Wonk Unit, Poldark actor Josh Whitehouse, Chris from Radical Dance Faction and more. The shows focus is to offer people a temporary escape from routine through music and to bring the community together. Now I’ve taken the radio show on a world tour, we are trying to link together the underground music communities around the world. Listen to the show at mixcloud.com/wayoutradio and find out more at wayoutradio.com
Twist Online : What kind of response has your show received so far?
DJ Frost : The response has been amazing! Each month we get sent CD’s, records and even homemade t-shirts from the listeners. I also get a lot of bands and artists inviting me to their gigs or asking to be on the show, which is great. I got a call asking if I’d like to interview the legendary keys player from Bob Marley and the Wailers, Earl Wya Lindo and I got to meet him. I also got another phone call asking me to be part of the research team at a TV studio for a Blues music show which was really fun. Bizarrely I had a member of Hawkwind write to me and ask to meet up. That was super strange! But the best response is when I’m on air and someone texts the studio saying my music has brightened their day!
Twist Online : What’s the best part of being a DJ and a radio personality?
DJ Frost : I love the atmosphere and excitement around musicians, fans and live concerts. There’s always a new album coming out, a new concert to go to and a creative, progressive buzz around music. I love being part of a music community and having friends who push me with their ideas and talents. I get to interview my heroes and create music with people I love, so it’s worth getting up for everyday!
Twist Online : Have you set some target to achieve as a music artist?
DJ Frost : Of course! Last year my goals were to earn a living from DJing, see the world and reach 50,000 followers. I have achieved these now! Currently I am making a documentary about the world tour and aiming to play over 100 shows by the end of the tour.
Twist Online : Are you currently working on any other project?
DJ Frost : Yes, the band I play drums for, Thee Dagger Debs, have recorded an album, and I’m looking forward to us releasing it on Damaged Goods Records in May and touring the UK! I’m also a music journalist for Vive Le Rock Magazine, so I’ve always got new interviews coming out!
