Lets Meet An Up And Coming Rap Artist DYG
Here is our conversation with an up and coming rap artist DYG.
Twist Online : Please introduce yourself to our readers.
DYG : My government name is Howard Derrick, but my artist name is DYG. I’m from Jackson, MS but now I’ve been in Houston TX for a while. I’ve been rapping since I was in high school from battles, to mixtapes, to shows. Now I’m working on my most serious project to date to let people know that talent and bars still exist lol.
Twist Online : Who or what inspired you to get into music industry?
DYG : Well I looked up to my big sis, and she had the GOAT CD case back in the day. I used to check out cds like it was a library lol. DMX “And Then There Was X” was the first rap cd I bought. And she bought it for me. After that it was all about Pac,Jigga, and Nas. Later on Eminem and T.I. Those are my biggest influences. I take a little piece from each when I zone out. Pac and Jigga the GOATs though.
Twist Online : Tell us about your upcoming release ””Hennessy x Weekends”?
DYG : Well I’ve been drinking a LONG time. Used to sneak cognac out my step pops stash and go to school with it mixed with coke. Pac put me on Hennessy though and I’m a simple dude so it stuck. Hennessy is smooth but potent. That’s how my flow is. And a weekend filled with hennessy is all about good times, passion and honesty. That’s what my music is about.
Twist Online : What kind of response you are expecting from its release?
DYG : I’m hoping to get some attention back to the lyricists. I’m big on my hooks and my lines. I want people to hear it and be like “Damn, this cat is from the South but he can really go. I think they play us weak down here like all we about is simple lyrics, trap beats, and ass shaking songs. I got something for that ass if that’s what they’re thinking lol. I feel like I have a classic mixtape.
Twist Online : What do you enjoy more performing on stage or working in studios?
DYG : That’s tough. I really like all parts of making music. It’s magic when you write some shit and then go to the booth and you and the engineer collab and it comes out how you thought. That’s priceless. But NOTHING compares to being onstage and watching the crowd reaction when they feeling what you saying and you put your soul into it like I do.
Twist Online : What’s your favorite music genre?
DYG : Hiphop of course. I study it from the past to present. It’s a lot to like and some stuff I honestly don’t fuck with. But I’m open minded. I listen to R&B, Pop, Rock, everything. I’ll go from My Chemical Romance to the Weeknd to Justin Timberlake to Michael Jackson to Sam Cook. Doesn’t matter.
Twist Online : Have you set some goals to achieve as a music artist?
DYG : I have. First things first is finish this mixtape. I’m a perfectionist so I will drag it out trying to make everything just right. After that I want to collab more in and out of Houston. Use it to network and get some visibility and show I’m serious about this. After that I want to do as many shows as possible while working on my follow up to Hennessy x Weeknds. It’s all about getting my music in as many ears as possible.
Twist Online : Are you working on any new project?
DYG : Not at the moment besides promoting and finishing Hennessy x Weekends. I’m always in the booth or working on new music and you can peep it at my IG @hennessywknds. I got more heat coming, just be patient and wait on the greatness!
