Music Artist NaCL talks about his album “Revenge of the Synth”
Today on our Hot Seat we have music artist NaCL with us. He has recently released an album called “Revenge of the Synth”
Twist Online : First of all tell us about the start of your music career.
NaCL : I acquired something called an Amstrad Studio 100, I think it was 1989 when I got it. A simple 4 track studio, recording on audio cassette.
I used it for years and made countless demos. It was a good grounding, but looking back compared to how you make music today in a DAW, it was really hard work, sampling records, make-shift vocal booths in my wardrobe etc. Fun but… limiting should we say!
I stopped making music for years then started to write a couple of books (thrillers and crime stories). However, music was always my true passion and I got the bug again in 2016, the timing felt right.
Twist Online : Who or what inspired you to get into music industry?
NaCL : There is a photo of me up at the record player (I think I must have been 3 or 4). The sound of the music coming from that was all the inspiration I needed.
Watching Top of the pops on the BBC, with all the glitz and glamour made me realise that I really wanted to be a part of the music business.
Twist Online : Tell us about your upcoming album “Revenge of the Synth”
NaCL : This is actually a side project of mine, a concept of finding up and coming vocalists / lyricists to complement some of the tracks I had made which originally I had the view of releasing them as instrumentals only.
So after hunting around, I put out some adverts online then handpicked some artists who I thought would fit the bill. I was overwhelmed with the response and the amount of talent out there! I do feel 100% that I made the right choices and they didn’t disappoint!
Twist Online : What kind of response you are expecting from the release?
NaCL : Well you never know what the general response will be, I’m just hoping people enjoy it obviously. Although it could be seen as a little diverse, no two tracks the same, there is a running theme of 80’s inspiration with a hint of house and lots of synth work – obviously – then some modern production sounds also.
So anyone who likes a dance album that’s not too fast and heavy with that distinctive indie dance vibe should check it out.
Twist Online : Any particular track from the album that’s your favorite?
NaCL : That’s like asking who your favourite child is isn’t it? I would not choose any collab tracks, just so not to upset anyone. So let’s go for 2. Laser Love – because it is the first time, in a long time, I had any of my own vocal on a track.
And if I could choose The Rum Runner, just because I wrote the whole track lying on the sofa during lockdown with a laptop, headphones and a tiny midi keyboard only.

Twist Online : What attracts you more, Working in studios or performing on stage?
NaCL : I don’t perform on stage. Not to say I wouldn’t if the right opportunity came along. My studio space at home is my sanctuary.
Twist Online : What’s the best part of being a music artist?
NaCL : So in a nutshell, I just love the whole process of writing and producing from scratch, through to the final mixdown and see how it develops along the way, from original concept to full finish track.
Twist Online : What’s up next?
NaCL : The outlook changes from week to week, but definitely collaborations with Angel Morale and YT Noiz plus others, and of course I have some material all ready for Revenge – Volume 2 (I physically couldn’t fit on one release).
I should have a plan and strategy of what’s next, but where’s the fun in that!
