God Jani is a DC Metropolitan based rapper and singer. He sings a genre of music he calls Underground Soul. His upcoming album “Underground Soul” debuts on April 17th. We are sharing our recent interview with him.

Twist Online : First of all tell us about the start of your music career.
God Jani :
I always loved to make music as a kid.. but it wasn’t until the end of high school that I started really being able to make a track. I was always real good at freestyling, my uncle would tell me that I was good at freestyling back when I was a baby lol. But My singing really came out through Gogo music.. a dc area form of music that I really gravitated too. I was in a few local bands and would always do the singing for them. But once I got to school In DC I began working with a collective known as $urreal. We organically started making music as friends and then we formed a group. Howard was a great place to start making music because of the variety of people from different parts of the world. It was truly a Mecca.

Twist Online : Who or what inspired you to get into music industry?
God Jani :
I grew up listening to greats like Bob Marley, and other reggae greats.. grew up listening to Great r&b music and soul. But I always had a special place for hip hop in my heart. That combined w/ my love to be creative made this almost like fate. Because I didn’t start off expecting to be an artist.. it all happened so naturally and effortlessly back when I was 18 years old dropping my first project. I think I have a special ear for music and understand it in a way where my perspective can add to the culture.. so that pushes me to keep creating and keep doing what I’m doing.

Twist Online : Tell us about your recent release Like That?
God Jani :
Like That was a fun track that me and my bruddah Tolliewood put together. It’s really a spring/summer time Kind of vibe and we had a fun time making it. We literally were on the couch rolling up, then the beat came on.. and the words came.. it was just really effortless. Look out for my boy Tolliewoods album by the way. It’s called Late Bloomer and it’s out now

Twist Online : What kind of response you have received from the release?
God Jani :
The response has been great. This was the first visual release from my new project and it was Tolliewoods first too so they were excited to hear the new track. I’m blessed to have great friends and supporters too.. that have been down from the beginning and it showed w/ “Like That”.

Twist Online : Our readers would like to know about your upcoming album “Underground Soul” ?
God Jani:
Underground Soul was inspired from my days listening to SoundCloud and hearing those random song that would make u be like “damn, that shit rocks” lol.. but u have no idea who the dude is. I’ve just realized that I love r&b and hip hop and stuff.. but I felt like the soul was missing. The soul is what I felt from these SoundCloud rappers and underground artists. They were doing it organically for the love of making music.. not for a check or to fit in.. and I always felt like I wasn’t a traditional industry artist. I always had a special love for the underground. So this albums dedicated to the Underground. That’s why I have 2 of my favorite Underground artists on the album “Polyester the Saint” and Ethereal. I listened to they albums just as much as any of my other favorite artists if not more. I truly believe the underground is where the gems are. So this album was dedicated to that energy.. and I embodied it and felt like underground soul fit the essence of that sound.

Twist Online : What attracts you more, Working in studios or performing on stage?
God Jani : Performing on stage.. It’s a different experience. I love to give a show.. when I’m looking at the crowd then the beat drops.. it’s nothing like it. U get lost in the vibe and energy of it all and just get a chance to be free.

Twist Online : What’s the best part of being a music producer?
God Jani :
It’s amazing.. my specialty is song writing so when I am able to truly connect with a beat.. it’s like ecstacy.. euphoric. And when u get to write for someone and help produce a song for them.. it gives u a sense of freedom. U get to create from a different place. It’s dope.

Twist Online : Have you set any goals to achieve?
God Jani
: Always.. I have big big Goals.. I want to give this art as much as I can because of how much it’s given me. I want to make those songs that last a generation. I want to make songs that touch the world.. that you can vibe and connect w/ regardless of race, your culture or background. I wanna be one of the best when it’s all said and done. Even if that’s in the eyes of just one person.. it would still be amazing to me knowing I created that effect in one persons life.. music is very special and to
Give the joy of a great song to someone is special
